Twitter for Windows Mobile

First of the random ideas for Over The Air hacks – a Twitter client for Windows Mobile.

Twitter client for Windows MobileWhen posting a tweet, the key is speed. I don’t want to wait to launch an app, I don’t want lots of features. I just want something to take my message and post it.

When reading tweets, I don’t mind waiting (e.g. for the list to be gathered).

And on mobile, I don’t really want regular notifications or polling. Following over a hundred people, I’d either hose my phone battery by constantly getting updates, or I’d miss most updates anyway. I just need to be able to see a list of updates when I want.

I went for a Today screen widget for posting, written in C++ to keep it quick and lightweight.
And if you click on the twitter logo, it launches your default browser at the mobile Twitter site http://m.twitter.com/. The best of both worlds πŸ™‚

Download a copy here
To set your username and password, go to the Options dialog for “Twit Today” from the Today screen control panel applet.

Update: There has been some confusion in the comments… this is a ‘Today screen‘ plugin – which means it is for the Today screen that you get on touchscreen devices. It is not a ‘Home screen’ plugin (which are meant for devices without a touchscreen). Apologies to the people whose time I wasted by being unclear!

Update 2: The current version is 1.6 (version is shown in the settings screen where you enter your username and password). If you have an older version than this, please download it again.

Thank you, the smartest app ever installed on my phone!

  2. bram says:

was just about to ask if the 6700 issue has been worked out but seems not, great app i use it constantly, even with onscreen keyboard

  3. dale says:

@bram – I remember reading somewhere that the 6700 issue was a firmware bug that has been fixed in newer firmware releases. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to find the link at the moment – sorry – and a quick Google for it only returns pages that mention it in passing such as http://www.phonenews.com/verizon-xv6800-gets-keyboard-fix-2714/

But it was a bug which affected all Today screen plugins using text boxes.

Sorry I can’t be more helpful, and many thanks for the kind comment.

  4. KIR says:

So how do you install it?

  5. Nick says:

Thanks a bunch! This works like a charm and is exactly what I was looking for. A great addition to my windows mobile device…

  6. Dave says:

This is great! Thanks! One recommendation for future updates, could you implement selecting the field using the treo nav pad? Right now, when i navigate down to the field with the buttons, instead of clicking in the field, it doesn’t allow me to type. Other than that, great work!

  7. Sma says:

    Incredible.
Works like a dream on the Willcom network in Japan on the Japanese WinMob6 OS (and) on the Sharp W-ZERO3 advanced es (WS011SH)
I totally agree, knock yourself out twitting about yourself, and see what other twits are doing on the mobile site. lite = smart.
    Nice one, really nice. Thanks.

  8. Great little app but I had to disable TouchFlo 3D to get it to work. No big deal since I didn’t really like TouchFlo anyway. Two suggestions:

    1. Allow navigating into the text field with the touchpad instead of highlighting the whole line which launches my web app.

    2. Allow post by hitting the enter key instead of having to click ‘OK’.

Both of these would eliminate the need for getting out the stylus which I try to avoid at all costs.

  9. A Twitterer says:

    TwitToday is just great!

  10. Diana says:

bummer, its not working on my HTC Touch.. Cant open what I downloaded..

  11. dale says:

@Diana – What happens when you try to open it? Have you tried downloading it again in case your first download was corrupted?

  12. gb says:

Brilliant! I’ve been looking for something like this for ages for my Omnia, works great.
    Thanks

  13. Dave says:

Great app and really useful. Keep up the good work. Many thanks.

  14. karen says:

Hi, Any suggestions on installing this app for non techie types. I’m driving myself insane trying to turn the .XML file into a .CAB file to load it onto my phone. Help, please? I will be eternally grateful and you’ll get major karma points πŸ˜‰

  15. dale says:

@karen – I’m not sure what you mean, sorry, What XML file are you talking about?

  16. I love this little app! It makes it so easy to add something to Twitter in a quick sweep of typing! It is like sending off a little text. I don’t have to pop open anything to do it, other than sliding my keyboard out.

I use an AT&T Tilt, aka HTC 8925. It works beautifully without any hitches. It installed easy and fast, and works with no problems at all!

  17. karen says:

Just installed it on my ipaq even thought it said it MIGHT not be compatible, and it installed. But nothing for it shows up in my Today set up screen. Is this not compatible with an HP ipaq running Windows mobile 2003 SE?

    Thanks!

(resubmitted under different name to avoid confusion with XML Karen πŸ˜‰ )

Using an HP iPaq with Windows Mobile 2003 SE, and while the program apparently installs, nothing shows up in my Today set up screen that it’s been added. Is this not compatible with either the iPaq or WM2003SE? Thanks.

  20. dale says:

    @sherwood01 – No, sorry. It’s Windows Mobile 5+ only.

  21. bwt53 says:

not working on HTC Mogul. Shortcuts to Twitter home page where I can sign in. But no place to sign in the TwitToday app…Today items control panel?…where

  22. dale says:

    @bwt53
    Start -> Settings -> Today -> Items -> bLADE TwitToday -> Options

    Hope that helps

  23. twofish says:

Great app! I was curious if there was a way to “dim” the input box until highlighted, ala Google Search?

  24. dale says:

@twofish – Thanks for the suggestion. Not sure I know how to do that, though.

  25. kleine says:

Hey I have a Palm Treo Pro and i was able to install this but not able to see it on my today screen is there something else you need to do after you install the .CAB file? Help!!! πŸ™‚

  26. dale says:

@kleine – Please see my comment to bwt53 above.

  27. Great App! Is there any way to get it to work in conjunction with third-party Today Screen plugins (such as HTC Home or Vito’s Winterface)?

  28. dale says:

@ATXwinterguard – I don’t know, but I doubt it. I don’t know if they have an SDK for customising their screens, but if they did, I would be surprised if it was the same as the Microsoft one. Sorry

  29. youttiao says:

cool apps, im twittering on it everyminute now.
But one more thing, can u add a “camara” button?
so I can share photos with my friends anytime anywhere.

  30. youttiao says:

and one more thing, can u share your cpp source code with me? u can email or gtalk me over my gmail address.

    thanks u!

  31. Andrew says:

I just installed this on my Sprint HTC Mogul and it works flawlessly. Nicely done!

I would love to be notified of updates- is there an RSS for the app, or a Twitter feed? Thanks!

  32. dale says:

    Hi Andrew

That’s a very good point – I really should’ve made it easier to know when I fix bugs in it.

Using a tag on my blog is a neat idea though – thanks! πŸ™‚

  33. mandeep indian says:

GREATEST application after well twitter itself!!! now this is what twitter should have done themselves thanks to you now they dont have to

  34. Kev says:

this doesn’t work on my “second today” (http://www.chi-tai.info/cs_wm_tools_im_cs.htm) screen.

    any ideas why?

  35. dale says:

Kev – No idea, sorry. I’m not familiar with the ‘Second Today’ tool, so don’t know enough about how it works to suggest a reason.

  36. Isabel Meyer says:

    Hi there

Have you sorted the problem with the 3D flow for HTC’s? I do use the functionality, so dont want to install if it is a problem.

    Tks
    ISABEL

  37. dale says:

@Isabel – Sorry, I’ve not tried. I don’t have access to any handsets with 3D flow, so I’ve not had a chance to investigate. To be honest, the nature of all of this hobby freeware development is that I code for what works best on my own mobile! Sorry about that. D

  38. Thanks.

This is the smart way to post and follow Twitter. Using it on my Samsung Epix running Windows 6.1. Love the speed and no battery drain!

Only negative: CAPS key doesn’t capitalize the first letter of my post.

  39. dale says:

using a htc dual touch and sent my first tweet, cool! I cant get letters to appear when using the keys with 1-9 on them. eg: key 2, I cant get the t only 2. I have turned on the key pad in options but then I cant see what has been typed in the input box as the letters don’t appear.
