We made a battery out of zinc washers and copper coins.<br \/>\n<br clear=\"all\"\/><br \/>\n<!--more--><strong>What we did<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/dalelane\/5628175998\/\" title=\"DSC01446 by dalelane, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5304\/5628175998_10349e5f4d_m.jpg\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" alt=\"DSC01446\" align=\"right\"  hspace=\"10\" style=\"border: thin black solid\"\/><\/a>The aim was to try and power a small LED using a home-made battery.<br \/>\n<br clear=\"all\"\/><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/dalelane\/5627598157\/\" title=\"DSC01450 by dalelane, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5110\/5627598157_e67da8f38b_m.jpg\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" alt=\"DSC01450\" align=\"left\"  hspace=\"10\" style=\"border: thin black solid\"\/><\/a>First, cut two short lengths of copper wire, and strip the ends. <\/p>\n<p>Stick the end of one piece of wire to a zinc washer.<br \/>\n<br clear=\"all\"\/><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/dalelane\/5627602601\/\" title=\"DSC01454 by dalelane, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5150\/5627602601_3f88725d69_m.jpg\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" alt=\"DSC01454\" align=\"right\"  hspace=\"10\" style=\"border: thin black solid\"\/><\/a>Stick the end of the other piece of wire to a 2p coin.<\/p>\n<p>This gives us the top and bottom of our battery.<\/p>\n<p>Attach the other ends of the wires to the pins of a small LED &#8211; we went for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maplin.co.uk\/high-brightness-red-leds-2057\">lowest voltage LED that we could find at maplins<\/a>.<br \/>\n<br clear=\"all\"\/><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/dalelane\/5627609695\/\" title=\"DSC01456 by dalelane, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5065\/5627609695_7928716def_m.jpg\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" alt=\"DSC01456\" align=\"left\"  hspace=\"10\" style=\"border: thin black solid\"\/><\/a>We cut up a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tesco.com\/groceries\/Product\/Details\/?id=254184444\">3p washing cloth<\/a> into small squares the size of our zinc washers. <\/p>\n<p>Then soaked them an electrolyte liquid.<br \/>\n<br clear=\"all\"\/><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/dalelane\/5627617325\/\" title=\"DSC01459 by dalelane, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5145\/5627617325_864b2b164f_m.jpg\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" alt=\"DSC01459\" align=\"right\"  hspace=\"10\" style=\"border: thin black solid\"\/><\/a>Googling for what makes a suitable electrolyte liquid returns a variety opinions, so we tried a few approaches.<\/p>\n<p>We made three batteries &#8211; one using lemon juice, one with vinegar and one using hot salty water. The vinegar seemed to result in the brightest LED.<br \/>\n<br clear=\"all\"\/><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/dalelane\/5627676449\/\" title=\"DSC01460 by dalelane, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5267\/5627676449_f7fff19023_m.jpg\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" alt=\"DSC01460\" align=\"left\"  hspace=\"10\" style=\"border: thin black solid\"\/><\/a>We then started building up layers &#8211; starting with the 2p coin with the wire stuck to it, then putting a zinc washer on top, then a piece of soaked cloth. <\/p>\n<p>Copper, zinc, soaked cloth, copper, zinc, soaked cloth, etc.<br \/>\n<br clear=\"all\"\/><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/dalelane\/5627678207\/\" title=\"DSC01462 by dalelane, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5227\/5627678207_a03357bf0b_m.jpg\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" alt=\"DSC01462\" align=\"right\"  hspace=\"10\" style=\"border: thin black solid\"\/><\/a>Finally, we put the zinc washer with the other wire stuck to it on top, completing the circuit.<br \/>\n<br clear=\"all\"\/><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/dalelane\/5627641019\/\" title=\"DSC01466 by dalelane, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5141\/5627641019_31efab0bd3_m.jpg\" width=\"180\" height=\"240\" alt=\"DSC01466\" align=\"left\"  hspace=\"10\" style=\"border: thin black solid\"\/><\/a>Ta da!
