News Release 25 February 2000

Scientists at the University of Bath are preparing for a two-day Science Fair at Green Park Station. Bath Taps into Science, due to take place on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th March, is part of the British Association’s National Science Week. The Mayor of Bath and ex-physics teacher MP Don Foster are amongst the guests expected to attend the whistle-stop event.

The fair aims to tap into local scientific and creative talent in order to inspire and educate young people in Science and Technology. Its proposed interactive displays include Liquid Nitrogen shows, chaotic musili, smart bubbles, giant eartrumpets, the secrets of ketchup revealed, a buggy challenge competition and mathematical mazes. A platform will also be provided for a dramatised account of the lives of local scientists William and Caroline Herschel.

The Bath Royal Literary & Scientific Institution (BRLSI) has organised the event with funding provided by The British Association and the Royal Society. Other local organisations that have volunteered to exhibit at the fair alongside the University of Bath include Bath Spa University College, the Bath Geological Society, Bath College and the Herschel Society.

Bob Draper, vice-chairman of the BRLSI and experimental officer at the University of Bath, said: "There is a lot of fun to be had from science and technology while learning at the same time. That's what National Science Week is all about. It is terrific that so many organisations and individuals have volunteered to help put together a show in Green Park Station."
