Employment :: Students Union > Vice President roles
I spent a year as Vice President (Academic Affairs) at the University of Bath Students' Union.

An elected position, it combined a variety of roles, serving the student population of the University of Bath. This page outlines some of the main aspects of the Vice President part of the job.
Vice President
I was the Vice President (Academic Affairs) of the Students' Union, one of the team of seven Sabbatical Officers.
As one of the team of Sabbatical Officers, my job was to support and facilitate the work of the Students' Union, working in both team work, and managerial and team-leader roles. This was done in a wide variety of ways:
  • Acting as a negotiator with the University, working to secure change where it is wanted and needed by the students, and ensuring that the interests of students are fully considered when the University is proposing changes

  • Being a representative for students, ensuring that students' views and interests are heard when and where they need to be

  • Acting as an advocate for individual students, speaking on their behalf in front of the University or external groups

  • Acting as a public figure, both externally - representing students to the Media, the Council and other outside agencies, and internally - being a focal point for any student with a question, comment or complaint

  • Media & Communications - working to promote the objectives and aims of the Students' Union and raise the profile of the services and activities it provides, amongst both the student body and the wider local community

  • Part of the role was similar to that of a "holiday rep", working to address individual queries and problems to ensure that students are happy and having a good time, and trying to solve any problems that they may have

  • Working in the recruitment of staff working for the Students' Union - from approving job profiles and advertisements, shortlisting candidates and interviewing as part of an interview panel
Trustee
Being a charity trustee for the organisation jointly with the other Sabbatical officers also entailed a number of responsibilities, including:
  • Responsibility for the overall management and decision-making for the organisation

  • Responsibility for the financial management of the organisation through monitoring of accounts and authorising of major expenditures

  • Guiding the direction of the organisation through strategic planning together with the senior management

  • Monitoring of the management of staff and resources of the organisation - including supervision and management of staff and volunteers, property, equipment and computer systems
