I was the Project Leader for a new two-year project between IBM and Bellemoor Secondary School in Southampton.
Bellemoor School
The aim of the project was to work with the school to find ways how IBM's skills and resources could add
value to the education of their pupils.
Web design
The first activity involved working with a dozen year 10 pupils to produce a school website.
This included organising and running an activity day at the IBM Hursley Park site for a school
trip, and running a weekly after-school class in web design.
Java Programming
This involved using the IBM Robocode
system to teach an introductory course in Java Programming. It included teaching a weekly class to
Year 8 and Year 9 pupils, as part of their I.T. studies.
Using Macromedia Flash to create interactive games
These were themed to fit in with a Health Awareness project that the
school was running in conjunction with Southampton NHS Health Care Trust,
and involved teaching the students the skills needed to create educational
games to illustrate various health-related topics, such as smoking.
Other activities
Other activities included a two-week work-experience placement for one of
the pupils.
