I spent my placement year (part of my Computer Science degree)
in the GSM Systems Division of Motorola, working as a Radio Sub-systems Software Engineer.
My main job was the development of the real-time embedded software that runs in GSM Base Stations.

Responsibilities
My responsibilities included:
- Maintenance of legacy software
- Implementing new software features in accordance with the Software Development Lifecycle
- Participating in technical reviews of my own and others work
- Mentoring of new staff
- Involvement in process improvement activities
- Development of in-house tools
- Content Manager of departmental intranet site
- Development of web pages
- Remote support work with customers at sites world-wide
- Preparing and delivering technical presentations
Highlights
I had a very successful year working at Motorola. Two highlights were receiving the
LCGI City and Guilds award, and being awarded
a student scholarship to pay for my remaining University tuition fees, in recognition for
my efforts.
