Since installing the latest update for my instant messaging client, Gaim (2.0.0 beta6), my photo editor, GIMP stopped working. More specifically, it wouldn’t start – reporting missing DLL’s like libexpat.dll.
They both use GTK for their interface. A quick Google shows that the gaim update comes with a newer version of GTK which breaks gimp.
I’ve upgraded to a newer version of GTK which seems to have fixed things – all is right with the world again. 🙂
This helped me with getting the GIMP fixed. Thanks.
What newer version?
gimp – i’m on version 2.2.13
gaim – it was 2.0.0 beta 6
you gotta love these names 🙂
I had the same problem with missing libexpat.dll for the same versions of Gaim and Gimp.
I solved it by downloading the missing “libexpat.dll” file from http://www.dll-files.com and copying it to my C:\Windows\System32 folder.
Thanks man!! I’m gonna check out new gtk because libexpat.dll broke for me too
Thanks man great data!
Trusted DLL Source To Fix My GIMP
I am looking for somebody I know to check their system for a DLL. I recently updated my Gaim client to version 2.0beta6 and it broke my Gimp. I have tried downloading old versions of Gimp and GTK but I cannot seem to find this file: libexpat.dll. Th…
I believe I managed to work the problem out… I uninstall all, gtk, gaim and gimp. After that I installed Gimp 2.2.13 (which comes with previous GTK). I search for the libexpat.dll. I saved a copy of it. Then I installed Gaim 2.0.0 beta6 (which comes with a newer GTK) this overwrote previous GTK version and crashes Gimp. Then I placed my copy of libexpat.dll that I copied before on my C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\bin folder and everything seems to work fine, hope this will help everyone.
Had the same problem. Fixed it like Krosto.
DO NOT download it at http://www.dll-files.com and especialy DO NOT copy it to C:\Windows\System32. Its spyware!

Do you have any reference to validate such allegation ?
I installed gaim this morning and as soon as it promted me to update my GDK a little voice said “don’t do it yet, it will break the gimp.” I needed an aim client for work, so I did it anyway.
Krosto’s trick to reinstall and then put the dll in the gimps bin worked beautifully, and makes the most sense since at this point, the gimp is the only one that needs it.
The same voice that told me not to upgrade my GDK told me not to snag the dll from http://www.dll-files.com. Good think I listened to the little voice that time. And btw…GDK version 2.10.8-rev-a did not work for me. That’s how they say to fix it at sourceforge.
well for anyone who dosn’t feel like replacing dlls, just go here and replace your version of gtk http://gladewin32.sourceforge.net/modules/news/
source forge is a reliable server, for those of you above woried about spyware.
This helped me too – thanks! (I used brad’s solution – just grabbing the installer from gladewin32.sourceforge.net. No uninstalling or reinstalling — just a new GTK download and install.)
Thanks again. R
