Running

Monday, April 30th, 2012

Inspired by Grace’s running post, there are a couple of running-related things worth mentioning today.

My run at lunchtime today means that I ran over 59 miles in April.

To put this in context, it’s kinda a big deal for me. I’m pretty rubbish at running. If you need proof… that’s what the pictures above are for. Do I look like someone who enjoys running? 🙂

If you prefer context in numerical form, (ignoring whatever running I couldn’t avoid in school P.E. lessons) I’ve only ever run 330 miles.

I ran 152 miles in 2010.
I ran 62 miles in 2011.
I’ve run 115 miles so far this year, 59 of which this month.

So I’m starting to get more into running – running more often and for longer distances.

With that in mind, before I can come to my senses and change my mind, I’ve entered the Great South Run 2012. Want to come and run 10 miles with me?

Something good today

screenshot of my logOne of my New Year’s resolutions this year was to keep a sort of daily log.

I said that once a day I would make a note of something good that happened that day.

Nothing detailed or lengthy. Just a one-line note.

It could be something good that I did at work. Not the usual day job stuff, but something that I did that was different, impressive or notable.

It could be something that I did at home – something with my family that I was pleased with, or that I enjoyed.

I wasn’t sure how I’d approach it when I started.

“Today wasn’t a waste because I…”? Or… “Today was a good day because I…”? Or… “Today was different because I…”? Or… “Today I made a difference by…”?

But I thought I’d start, and see what happened.

A few months later, and not only am I still doing it, but I’m finding it surprisingly rewarding.

A week off for half-term

Saturday, February 18th, 2012

This week has been school holidays in Hampshire, so I took a week off to entertain the rampaging monsters otherwise known as my children.

As always, it’s been a fun mix of things. With a three year old and a seven year old, the general plan is to try something a bit different every day so they’re not bored by the end of the week.

We did a few arts and craft things. We made our own candles, melting down candle wax chips from Hobbycraft in a saucepan, adding colouring and pouring them into moulds. We did some sewing, making stuff like animal-shaped cushions.

We spent an afternoon mucking about with a camera and a microphone. Faith loves singing into a small USB microphone we’ve got, so we recorded her singing some of her favourite songs. Grace tried making a stop motion animation using her Sylvanian Families. It ended up being 25 seconds long, but between taking all the photos, and recording the voices and sound-effects, it took her ages!

Making an evaporograph

Friday, February 17th, 2012

It’s still half-term, so time for another random “what can I do with the kids that’s vaguely science-y and only needs stuff that we have around the house”.

We made an evaporograph.

No, I’d never heard of it before, either.

But it was pretty cool which is why I’m blogging it myself instead of leaving Grace to write it up 😉

Making a voicebox

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

I didn’t really know what a voicebox was beyond knowing that Ned on South Park used one.

But it’s half-term week, so Grace and I tried to make our own out of straws, tape and a balloon. And it sort of worked!

Here’s how it worked…

Tracking how my kids’ handwriting changes

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

A few years ago, I wrote a post about how you can make a font based on a sample of your own handwriting.

I did it to help Grace, at the time aged three, to make a font of her writing as part of a present for Amy.

Graham suggested doing this every year, and as it turns out, that is what I ended up doing.

It’ll be a nice thing to have when she’s older – a record of what her writing used to be like. And it’s fascinating to see how her handwriting develops year-on-year.

We’ve got a few of them now, so time to share how it looks so far.

Why I go to barcamps

Sunday, November 6th, 2011

Last week, I went to BarCamp London. As always, it was a great weekend.

If you’ve not been to something like this before, the idea is that it’s a conference where each attendee contributes a session. There’s no real theme – just talk about something interesting.

You end up with an agenda made up of the interests, hobbies and skills of the random collection of people who managed to get a ticket. It makes for a more varied and eclectic agenda then you get from a traditionally organised conference.
