A scheduler for Remember The Milk

A quick tool I made for setting due dates of tasks in Remember The Milk by dragging them onto a calendar

I’ve mentioned Remember The Milk (RTM) before – the online to-do list manager. I’ve been using it for years.

My workflow has settled into:

  1. Capture
    Any time I think of something that I’ll probably need to do, it gets thrown into RTM. Then I relax knowing it won’t get forgotten.
  2. Plan
    Periodically review everything in RTM, working out what needs to be done soon, what can wait, and so on.

The RTM web application interface doesn’t suit my approach to scheduling tasks. I need a different view for planning and triaging.

So I made one.

Making the RTM cow more sympathetic

I am a big fan of Remember The Milk (RTM), the online to-do list manager. It’s one of the few sites (like flickr) that I’m happy to pay for.

For some reason, the logo for RTM is a cow’s face. Which means that I get a cow staring at me when I’m deciding what I need to do next.

I had a random thought this evening – that the cow should really look more sympathetic when my task list is so full. Because he’s really quite heartless, even when I’m manically busy. 😉

And once I had the idea, I kinda had to give it a quick try. (And I wonder why I’m busy…)

So I’ve knocked up a quick Greasemonkey script – which should work with Firefox with the Greasemonkey add-on, or with Google Chrome.

Bye bye, Outlook

As a major GTD nerd, it’s a temptation to constantly tweak and tinker with my personal productivity systems.

But I normally resist. This week, I’ve had a major overhaul, so thought I’d share what I’ve been doing and some of my reasons why.

I should mention that I nicked a lot of these ideas from Gareth, so big thanks to Gareth!

Why the change?

There were a number of reasons that motivated this.

Part of it was because I’m switching from mainly using Windows Mobile phones to my new shiny Palm Pre.

Part of it was a desire to move my main workstation from Windows XP to Ubuntu, after seeing so many friends and colleagues rave about it, hearing an inspiring talk on Linux from Bob Sutor, and getting so much abuse from people I’m too polite to name 😉
